Five Mercy Nurses Honored among Iowa’s “100 Great Nurses”

Courage, competence, and commitment—these qualities perfectly reflect five of Mercy – Dubuque’s nurses who have been selected as Iowa’s “100 Great Nurses.” This recognition is awarded by the University of Iowa College of Nursing to honor nurses across the state of Iowa for their excellence. These five nurses are the only ones in Dubuque County to receive this honor in 2010.

Jan Hayertz, a Community Education nurse who has worked at Mercy for 33 years, was nominated because she cares passionately for the individual person. She excels at seeing a need, seeking out solutions, and putting her energy into meeting the need.

Sandy Kass, a nurse in Clinical Informatics, was nominated for her involvement with hospital committees and activities, and especially for her compassion for patients and families during the toughest times. Sandy has been a Mercy nurse for 35 years.

Ann Miesen is a nurse in the Ambulatory Services Center and has worked at Mercy for 29 years. In addition to her extraordinary service at Mercy, Ann was nominated for volunteering with her local ambulance crew and continually going above and beyond in times of crisis.

Jane Myers has worked on Mercy’s Medical Unit for six years. Jane demonstrates professionalism, great compassion and respect in all her person contacts, continuously seeks new knowledge, and is truly devoted to developing excellence in nursing. She is an icon for the profession of nursing.

Sue Walz is a house supervisor who has been at Mercy for 31 years. Sue was nominated for her service to the poor, providing medical support at clinics during eight mission trips to Jamaica. Sue proudly celebrates her nursing profession.
