Back & Neck Pain

Back and neck pain are common complaints, and severe pain can limit your day-to-day activities.

Symptoms

  • Back pain
  • Difficulty performing day-to-day activities
  • Pain radiating to the buttocks or legs
  • Numbness/tingling in the legs or feet
  • Difficulty with bowel or bladder - see a doctor immediately
  • Neck pain, either sharp or dull
  • Neck stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Pain radiating to arms
  • Numbness/tingling in arms or hands

Primary Treatments

You may be able to reduce or control your back or neck pain with the following treatments:

  • Alternating heat and cold applications
  • Over-the-counter or prescription pain medication
  • Cortisone injection
  • Physical therapy
  • Traction

Surgery

Few people need surgery for back or neck problems, but if your primary treatments are unsuccessful, your doctor will determine a diagnosis and whether surgery is appropriate.
