Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body, unless of course you are suffering from shoulder pain.

Symptoms

With a variety of causes for shoulder pain, you may be experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Frozen shoulder or limited motion
  • Pain or tenderness around the joint
  • Swelling

Primary Treatments

You may be able to reduce or control your pain with the following treatments:

  • Over-the-counter or prescription pain medication
  • Alternating heat and ice applications
  • Cortisone injection
  • Physical therapy to strengthen and stretch your rotator cuff tendons and shoulder muscles

Surgery

Surgery is generally performed when you have tried primary treatments without success. Following a diagnosis, your doctor will determine if surgery is an option.

Shoulder Recovery

Following your surgery, therapists from Mercy’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program will work with you to keep muscles around your shoulder from getting stiff. Our therapists will also teach you how to move your arm around by using your other (good) arm and how to strengthen your shoulder muscles.
