Mercy takes special precautions to make its Birth Center secure. Our “Hugs and Kisses” infant security system makes that security state-of-the-art. Right after birth, the system links each baby to its mother, and the whereabouts of all babies is monitored by computer during the course of their hospital stay. The system is also used with young children in Mercy’s pediatrics department.
"Hugs & Kisses" is an active system. It can locate the baby at any time, not just at doorways or other exits. A tamper-proof “Hugs” band on the baby’s ankle is programmed to match a “Kisses” band on the mother’s wrist. When mom is handed her baby, a pleasant lullaby tone sounds. In the unlikely event of a mismatch, a quiet, negative sound occurs. Mercy was the fifth hospital in the U.S. to employ the “Kisses” part of the system which links mom and baby. If a baby is taken anywhere that is not permitted, alarms go off and security is alerted throughout the hospital. Birth Center staff are well-trained on the proper response to an alarm.
Expectant parents learn about Mercy’s infant security on tours of the Birth Center prior to delivery. They appreciate the high level of security for their newborns. It is reassuring to know that each one of those babies is protected not only by its loving parents and Mercy’s caring staff, but also by an outstanding infant security system.
