The role of the Mercy nurse extends beyond the boundaries of hospital nursing practice. Mercy nurses are involved in a wide variety of community health, wellness and charitable giving activities:
- "Caring for our Community" annual nursing-sponsored giving campaign to benefit a charitable organization within the community each year
- Organizational and fund raising support for nonprofit organizations such as American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes and Alzheimers Association.
- Presentations to civic organizations
- Innovative community health education and screenings
- Personal birth consulting services for couples preparing for childbirth
- Community support groups for people with brain injuries, breast cancer, breastfeeding, heart failure disease, and more
- Innovative, intensive, and evidence-based case management services for congestive heart failure (CHF) and diabetes patients
- Collaborate with Hospice and other care providers to support end of life care needs
- Support for rural health safety
- Leadership for regional faith community nursing
