Parish Nursing

Parish health ministry functions as a referral and resource service within a church community. Wellness is the primary goal of the ministry. The role of the local church is to promote health care, not provide health care. Parish health ministry is a visible means of identifying God's love within the community.

Health ministry in rural communities has a focus on:

  • The aging and the lonely.
  • Geographical and distance challenges in receiving health care, assistance and support.
  • Needs of youth and young adults.
  • Health and safety issues related to farming.

Examples of parish health ministry:

  • Hospital and home visitation
  • Blood-pressure screening
  • Bereavement classes
  • Support groups
  • Parenting classes
  • Services of healing and prayer
  • Seminars on aging
  • Advanced directives
  • Stress management
  • Weight control
  • CPR
