Senior ER
|
|
Mercy Senior ERSM is the first specialized emergency care for seniors in Iowa. Senior ERSM meets the special medical needs, preferences and physical comforts of patients age 65 and up.
Senior adults have unique care needs when emergencies arise. Pre-existing medical conditions, multiple medications, nutrition or even issues with depression could turn an injury or illness into something more serious.
All aspects of your Senior ERSM experience are designed with the senior patient's long-term health and wellness in mind.

At Mercy's Senior ERSM:
-
A team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, case managers and other clinical staff, assess physical function, cognitive status and level of risk.
-
Staff members are trained to recognize and address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of seniors. Our physicians are board-certified in emergency medicine and have specialized geriatric emergency medicine training, and our nurses are certified in Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE).
-
Staff consults with the patients' personal primary care physician about treatment options and the care plan.
-
Pharmacists work to resolve medication related concerns such as drug interactions that may be affecting the patient's health.
-
Our geriatric case manager provides outpatient assessment to the patient and his or her family to help you maintain independence and a healthy lifestyle and, if necessary, develop an alternative care plan.
-
We optimize the senior's comfort and safety in a peaceful setting. Softer lighting. Private rooms. Non-skid/non-glare floors. Extra thick pressure-reducing mattresses. Hearing and visual amplifiers. Large-print charts and discharge papers, oversized clocks, large print way-finding signage. These amenities and more help reduce anxiety, disorientation and minimize the risk of falls and ulcers.
-
New staffing standards enable our caregivers to spend more time evaluating the patient's health and medical needs with a goal of addressing the root causes of issues.
