Mercy Sleep Lab

Mercy Sleep LabMercy Medical Center's Sleep Lab is an accredited sleep disorder center with four sleeping units, and the capability of performing 16 sleep studies per week. Registered sleep technicians utilize the latest technology for diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Our specialized team of sleep professionals is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care available. Many times the data gathered during the sleep study makes it possible to treat the condition that very night.

Millions of Americans suffer with debilitating sleep disorders, including apnea, restless leg syndrome, insomnia and narcolepsy. Surveys show an additional 60 million people experience sleep difficulties more than once per week. The cost to society is billions of dollars in lost productivity, insurance claims, wasted medical resources and a greatly reduced quality of life.

Having a Sleep StudyHaving a Sleep Study

  • Sleep subjects come in around 9 p.m., change into their pajamas, and a lab technician attaches electrodes with adhesive.
  • No invasive needles or wires are used.
  • Sleep subjects are free to read or watch TV until lights out.
  • Monitors record breathing, heart rate, brain waves and eye and leg movements.

Types of Sleep Disorders:

Insomnia:
Difficulty falling or staying asleep; waking earlier than desired. Insomnia can be caused by a number of medical or behavioral factors such as stress, tension, shift-work or poor sleep habits.

Sleep Apnea:
Brief pauses of breathing during sleep. Often associated with loud snoring, snorting and gasping for breath. Sleep apnea can result in daytime sleepiness, depression, and cardiovascular problems.

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness:
Struggling to stay awake during the day. Reduced productivity at school or work; memory or concentration problems.

Sleep ApneaNarcolepsy:
Sleep attacks; sudden muscular weakness in response to strong emotion; brief paralysis upon falling asleep or waking up.

Restless Leg Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder:
Uncomfortable sensations in the legs near sleep time, sometimes described as a creepy crawly feeling. Legs and arms may move or jerk involuntarily during sleep.

Sleepwalking, Night Terrors, Sleep Related Violence, Sleep Eating:
These are unwanted behaviors that occur when the brain is partially asleep.

Poor sleep can have a high price - at home, on the job, and on the road. If you suspect sleep apnea in yourself or someone you care about, ask your doctor for a referral to the Sleep Lab at Mercy. For more information, call (563) 589-8755.
