Responsible management of resources is a necessary component of the nursing professional practice model in order that Mercy Medical Center can remain financially strong and capable of supporting progressive practice and a thriving practice environment.
Transparency of financial information is a key component of the organization's financial management strategy.
Regular updates regarding financial performance are provided to employees, and managers have ready access to
on-line reports to stay abreast of the financial condition of their services/department and the organization as a whole.
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is a member of Mercy's senior leadership team, and advocates for resources to support excellent nursing care with an organization-wide perspective. The CNO champions funding for innovative and progressive initiatives to establish and sustain a Magnet environment and positive patient outcomes This includes accessing new technology, clinical and professional development opportunities, optimal staffing ratios and systems, quality facilities and equipment, and evidence-based improvement.
Staffing is a challenging aspect of hospital resource management because of the unpredictable fluctuations in patient census. Mercy has a comprehensive and systematic staffing program designed to meet patient needs in an inclusive manner. Staffing is decentralized and conducted on a shift-by-shift basis. Nurses have the flexibility to increase and reduce staffing levels as necessary to most effectively meet patient needs.
Flexible staffing and scheduling options, which enhance quality of life for nurses and other clinicians, are highly valued
and include modalities such as self-scheduling, weekend-only hours, and a combination of 8 and 12 hour shifts.
Mercy leadership promotes responsible spending, and encourages staff members to ask for what they need. It is recognized that spending resources may ultimately save resources or generate a positive return on the investment. Consistent with this belief, Mercy invests in the long view, creating and maintaining a thriving nursing practice environment to minimize staff turnover and retain the best nurses to ensure the highest quality of care.
